When No.828's 10-year boiler certificate was approaching its expiry date the SLPTF and the Strathspey Railway Company made an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for assistance with the costs of overhauling the locomotive. The Heritage Lottery Fund considered the application at its meeting in September 2001 and agreed to make a grant of up to £94,500 available to assist with the costs.

UPDATE Following a further appeal for funding to help with increased boiler overhaul costs the Heritage Lottery Fund has agreed to increase the grant given to No.828 by £17,592. The SLPTF and the Strathspey Railway Company are very grateful for this additional assistance.

The estimated cost of returning No. 828 to full working order currently stands at around £220,000.
